Book Review : Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count by Steve Huston

Figure Drawing for Artists by Steve Huston is the figure drawing book I have been waiting for.  Huston's boxer series are some of my favorite modern figure paintings because they have a raw physicality, strong brushwork and great movement.  In his book,  Huston does a great job of teaching how to balance structure with gesture which he so  successfully does in his own work.  It is such a simple concept, but so many figure drawings "die" in the  academic rendering. Huston does an exemplary job of demonstrating how to preserve the liveliness of the pose with a solid anatomical structure through analyzing  old Master works, the use of basic forms  and a "homework"exercise at the end of each chapter.  Note:this book is more of an applied anatomy rather than a pure anatomy book.  I highly recommend it to all artists but especially intermediate to advanced artists.
